Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to find out whether or not students’ speed reading and comprehension be boosted by implementing rate-buildup reading, skimming, and scanning strategies taught using hybrid learning method; that is the combination of electronic learning (e-learning) with face to face method. The population of this research was the third semester students of English Department, Tarbiyah Faculty, UIN Alauddin Makassar. The sample of this research consisted of 30 students where 15 of them were involved in experimental group and 15 others were involved in control group. This research employed quasi experimental design. In conducting this research, students involved in experimental group were given treatment by using hybrid learning method. The researcher created a website named www.muhaiminabdullah.com and filled it with passages and comprehension questions for students involved in the experimental group. Rate-buildup reading, skimming, and scanning strategies were explained in face to face method. For students involved in control group, they were given printed passages and comprehension questions. Rate-buildup reading, skimming, and scanning were given in face to face method. The data were analyzed by using SPSS ver. 18.0. Based on data analysis, both students involved in experimental group and control group showed improvement toward their speed reading and comprehension. Students involved in experimental group improved their speed reading and comprehension significantly than the students involved in control group.
