Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to the first grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. This research consist of three objectives; (1)To find out the students’ perceptions of the characteristics of an effective EFL teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. (2) To identify the differences between male and female senior high school students’ perceptions in terms of the characteristics of an effective EFL teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. (3)To identify differences among the perceptions of low, medium, and high achievers in senior high school in terms of the characteristics of an effective EFL teacher at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. This research was designed by using descriptive quantitative research. The researcher had collected the data through paper based questionnaire and documentation as the research instrument. These instruments were taken to find out the perception of the students regarded the characteristics of an effective EFL teacher. The questionnaire which was consisted of 39 items. The sample consisted of 64 students of first grade of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar, in Academic Year 2016/2017. The research outcomes were: (1) the researcher indicated that all of the students believed that the categories (pedagogical, personal, social and professional competence) were important. It means all of the categories should an effective EFL teacher have;(2) there is no significant difference between male and female perception. It proved by t-test score which (1.712, 1.311, 1.345, and .646) at p > 0.05(3) there is no significant difference in low, medium and high achievers perception. It proved by ANOVA test score which (1.061, 1.078, 2.041, and 5.033) at p > 0.05. It means both of research question number two and three are hypothesis null (H0) is accepted.
