Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed at finding out (1) how the L1 and the L2 interacted each other in the classroom context, (2) how the lecturers acted toward the L1 and the L2 in the classroom and (3) what was the implication of the translanguaging on TEFL. The research employed descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects were two English lecturers of Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. All of them used Indonesian language in their daily life and in the classroom they used Indonesian language also as their mother tongue and English language as target language. In the research findings there are five types of translanguaging as the way of the L1 and the L2 interacted each other in the classroom that used by the lecturers in teaching and learning process. Those were Inter-Sentential translanguaging which was effective, Intra- Sentential translanguaging which was effective, insertion translanguaging which was effective, congruent-lexicalization translanguaging which was effective and entire translanguaging which was also effective. The data had shown that the lecturers used ten Functions’ of translanguaging as the action toward the L1 and the L2 in the classroom. Those were checking understanding which was effective, Explaining rule of grammar which was effective, Explaining pronunciation and spelling which was not effective, Explaining exercise in the book which was not effective, to co-construct meaning which was effective, Explaining meaning of abstract vocabulary which was effective, Organization classroom setting which was effective too, class management and control which was effective, praising which was not effective and telling jokes/anecdotes which was also effective. Furthermore, The implication of translanguaging in one University of South Sulawesi in Indonesia on TEFL was very useful because it could be used as a method or strategy in explaining English materials, motivating the students to speak, especially for low level students, analizing problem and encourage them to pay attention when the teacher explaining material.
