Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) through Pictorial Riddle was able to improve students’ ability on content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics of SMP Negeri 1 Suli. The research employed quasi-experimental method with pretest-posttest control group design. The subject populations of this research were 125 students and the sample consisted of 42 students taken from the second year students of SMPN 1 Suli in academic year 2012/2013 by using cluster random sampling technique. The data were collected through writing test administered in pretest and posttest of each class. The data were analyzed by using quantitative analyses. The result of this research showed that the students’ result of posttest for experimental group was higher than the students’ result of posttest for control group. It was proved by the result of posttest mean score of experimental group (78.2) that was higher than the control group (64.5), standard deviations were 13.1 and 12. The result of hypothesis testing using t-Test showed that t-Test value was greater than t-Table (3.43>2.021) so hyphothesis was tenable. It means that using Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) through Pictorial Riddle can improve the students writing ability to write descriptive paragraph of the second year students of SMPN 1 Suli.
