Abstract

Nur Biati Haryanto Muliati. M State University of Makassar Abstract The objective of this research were to find out:1) the students’ motivation in learning English,2) the students’ learning strategy is mostly applied in learning English,3) the students’ English achievement,4) the correlation between students’ motivation and English achievement,5) the correlation between students’ learning strategies and English achievement. This study employed correlation research. The technique of taking sample was random sampling. The population of this research was 336 students of the second year students of SMA Negeri 12 Makassar which belong to nine classes. The sample of this research was 84 students. The research data were collected using questionnaires and test. The data were analyzed by using Likert scale and descriptive statistics through SPSS 17.0 version. The research result showed that the second year students of SMA 12 Makassar in academic year 2013/2014 have high motivation in learning English. This was proven by mean score of motivation 146.71. It was classified into high motivation categories ranges from 136 – 167 score. The students applied meta-cognitive strategy in learning with mean score 68.25. The students gain poor category in English achievement. This was proven by mean score of test 50.4 gain poor category in achievement categories ranges from 36-55 score .The correlation between motivation and English achievement there was correlation with r = 0.22 classified into low category range from 0.200-0.400. The correlation between learning strategy and English achievement was positive and significant with r = 0.39 classified into low category range from 0.200-0.400.
