Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the critical role of Community of Practice to enhance mutual understanding as part of intercultural learning programs held by the Indonesian Foundation for Intercultural Learning Chapter Makassar. As former AFS students and volunteers who have been working for the Foundation, we learn that in order to bring the message of building peace and understanding among people around the world, Community of Practice is one possible ways. This paper defines community of practice as a group of people who share knowledge and experience through interaction between the members. The Indonesian Foundation for Intercultural Learning has been able to establish community of practice at many levels, local, national, and international. Host families, students, volunteers are people who promote and disseminate intercultural learning through their interactions. We argue that without Community of Practices, the ideas of Intercultural Learning to create more secure and peaceful world would not be reinforced. Community of Practice has allowed people to create, refine, communicate and use knowledge that bring meaning for people works. In the context of intercultural learning, it will facilitate people to engage in activities with values that are in line with the ideas of intercultural learning.
