Abstract

Abstract: This study compared the understanding of local wisdom values between Makassar State University students and the ChatGPT AI language model. The study aimed to assess the difference in understanding between these human and non-human participants. The research participants comprised 165 Makassar State University students and one AI ChatGPT chatbot program. The instrument used was a test containing questions related to local wisdom. The analysis technique used was quantitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that ChatGPT had a higher and deeper understanding of local wisdom values than students. ChatGPT excelled in all variables measured, including Local Wisdom (Overall), Thick Description, Cultural text, Symbolism, and Cultural Interpretation. It indicates that ChatGPT has an excellent ability to identify, analyze, and interpret local wisdom values. AI, such as ChatGPT, can effectively study local wisdom, providing significant advantages in cultural understanding. This research has important implications for education and the use of technology in the study of local wisdom, opens up opportunities for the integration of AI in the learning process and cultural research, and demonstrates the potential of AI in enriching methods and approaches in the study of culture.
