Abstract

"The Symbolic Meaning of Mappadendang in the Ritual Tradition of Rice Harvesting of the Bugis Barru Community (Pierce's Semiotic Theory)". Regional Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Languages and Literature, Makassar State University. Supervised by Andi Agussalim Aj. And Aswati Asri. This study aims to describe the shape of Icons, Indexes and Symbols in the Mappadendang tradition of the Bugis Barru community. This research was conducted in Barru district, South Sulawesi. South Sulawesi. As for the informants, the indigenous people of the Bugis tribe were considered to have mastered and knew the Mappadendang tradition in depth. This research method is qualitative through a semiotic approach. Primary data was collected through observation and in-depth interviews related to research and secondary data obtained by the author through literature review, namely collecting data obtained from various data related to research in the form of books, articles, data from libraries and other literature related to research. . The results of this study show that there are: 1) Ikon consists of 2 points, namely palungeng sibawa alungeng and bette, 2) Index consists of 5 points, namely mappammula, mattettu aseo / ase pulu, pa'dupa, ma'baca doing and mammenca', 3) Symbols consist of 11 points, namely kaluku na golla cella, colli' daung kaluku, palungeng malempu', ase, ase pulu', waju bodo, Alungeng Aju, Tello, Manu' Kampong, Otti/Loka, Bale.
