ABSTRACT SUMARNIATI BAKRI. 2016. Analysis of Conceptual and Procedural Mistakes in Solving Mathematics Problems in a Form of Algebra of Class VII Students at SMPN 1 Manuju in Gowa District ( Supervised by Usman Mulbar and Ilham Minggi). The objectives of the research were (i) describing the kind of conceptual and procedural mistakes in solving mathematics problems in a form of algebra; and (ii) describing the factors which caused the kind of conceptual and procedural mistakes in solving mathematics problems in a form of algebra. The research was qualitative with descriptive-explorative approach. The data of the research were collected by giving diagnostic test and interview. The subjects of the research were 3 students who were divided in three categories, namely one student with high ability, one student with medium ability, and one student with low ability. The results of the research reveal that (i) conceptual mistake happened to the students with high, medium, and low ability, namely inappropriate in presenting the concept in various forms of mathematics representations and inappropriate in applying algebra concept in solving problem. The other conceptual mistake also happened to student with medium and low ability, namely inappropriate in revealing a consept and inappropriate in classifying mathematics objects based on its characteristics. Besides, the subject with medium ability also performed conceptual mistake, namely inappropriate in giving example from one concept. Procedural mistake happened to the student with high ability, namely irregularity of stages in solving mathematics problems in a form of algebra and inappropriate in calculation. The student with medium ability performed procedural mistake, namely irregularity in calculation, inappropriate in manipulating algebra form, mistake because the student could not continue the solution stage. The student with low ability also performed procedural mistake, namely irregularity of stages in solving mathematics problems in a form of algebra, inappropriate in subtituting the value into variable, and inappropriate in calculation; (ii) the causes of conceptual mistake among others unable to understand the concept from variable and coefficient, unable to understand the concept and procedure of classifying the similar rates, unable to understand the use of algebra concept in solving problem. The causes of conceptual mistake among others are did unable to understand calculation procedure among rate, unable to understand arithmetic operation with integers of negative mark, unable to understand the way to substitute the value into variable, unable to understand the way to simplify fractions, and unable to understand arithmetic operation in exponential number.
