It has been conducted pre-experimental research on the giving of initial competency-based assignment in the thermodynamics course to describe the learning outcomes of students who attended the course after application of this strategy and whether the target of 60% of the students who received grades of A and /or B was achieved. This pre-experimental study was carried out for 6 months. The subjects of this study were the Physics Education Students of 2012 class who attended this course in academic year 2013/2014 as many as 45 people. The results of this study showed that the average learning outcome of student on the subject of thermodynamics after the application of the strategy was 71.09 from the ideal value of 100. Percentage of students who received grades of A and B was 68.88%, thus the criteria for successful implementation strategy has been fulfilled.
