Abstract

ABSTRACT The objective of this research was to find out whether or not the use of UVIOPro was effective to improve the students writing skill in terms of content, organization, mechanics, vocabulary, and language use. This research applied a Quasi-Experimental design. It was designed into two groups: experimental group and control group. The population of this research was the second semester students of English Education department at FKIP Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in academic year 2014/2015. A total number of the population was 380 students. The researcher used a cluster random sampling by applying a lottery technique to take the samples. Therefore, the samples of this research consisted of one class as an experimental group and one class as a control group. Each class consisted of 30 students. The data of this research were collected through writing test, pretest and posttest. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS version 20 for windows program. Referring to the statistical results, the findings of this research showed that the mean score of posttest for the experimental group was 64.08, while the mean score of posttest for the control group was 51.32. It means that the mean score of the experimental group was greater than the control group. Besides, the t-test analysis for the students’ score in experimental and control groups revealed that p-value or Sig. (2-tailed) was less than (α) = 0.05, which was .000 < 0.05. Therefore, H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. Moreover, in terms of the five components of writing, the results of significance test reveal that the Sig. (2-tailed) of content, organization and mechanics were .000 and .004, meanwhile, the Sig. (2-tailed) of vocabulary and language use were .105 and .087. It indicated that the Sig. (2-tailed) of content, organization, and mechanics were less than (α) = 0.05, while, the Sig. (2-tailed) of vocabulary and language use were greater than (α) = 0.05. Based on the findings of this research, it can be concluded that the use of UVIOPro in teaching writing was effective to improve the students’ writing skill.   ABSTRAK JUNAID. 2016. Asfah Rahman dan Kisman Salija) Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan UVIOPro efektif atau tidak untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menulis mahasiswa dalam hal isi, organisasi, mekanik, kosakata, dan penggunaan bahasa. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain Quasi-Eksperimental. Penelitian ini dirancang dalam dua kelompok; Kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Populasi penelitian ini adalah mahasiswa semester II jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris FKIP di Universitas Muhammadiyah Makassar di tahun akademik 2013/2014. Jumlah populasi adalah 380 mahasiswa. Peneliti menggunakan cluster random sampling yang menerapkan teknik undian untuk mengambil sampel. Oleh karena itu, sampel penelitian ini terdiri dari satu kelas sebagai kelompok eksperimen dan satu kelas sebagai kelompok kontrol. Setiap kelas terdiri dari 30 mahasiswa. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui tes tertulis, yaitu pretest dan posttest. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan statistik deskriptif dan inferensial melalui SPSS versi 20 untuk program windows. Mengacu pada hasil statistik, temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata dari posttest untuk kelompok eksperimen adalah 64,08, sedangkan nilai rata-rata dari posttest untuk kelompok kontrol adalah 51,32. Ini berarti bahwa nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen lebih besar daripada kelompok kontrol. Selain itu, analisis t-test untuk nilai mahasiswa dalam kelompok eksperimen dan kontrol mengungkapkan bahwa p-value atau Sig. (2-tailed) kurang dari (α) = 0,05, yaitu 0,000 < 0,05. Oleh karena itu, H1 diterima dan H0 ditolak. Selain itu, dari segi lima komponen tulisan, hasil uji signifikansi menunjukkan bahwa Sig. (2-tailed) dari isi, organisasi dan mekanik adalah 0,000 and 0,004, sementara itu, Sig. (2-tailed) dari kosa kata dan penggunaan bahasa yaitu 0,105 dan 0,087. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa Sig. (2-tailed) dari isi, organisasi, dan mekanik kurang dari (α) = 0,05, sedangkan, Sig. (2-tailed) dari kosa kata dan penggunaan bahasa lebih besar dari (α) = 0,05. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan UVIOPro dalam pengajaran menulis efektif untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis mahasiswa.
