Abstract

ABSTRACT This research was conducted to the first grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. This research consists of three objectives; (1) To find out the learning strategies used by the high, medium and low achievers of English at SMAN 3 Makassar. (2) To identify the differences among high, medium and low achievers of English in using language learning strategiesat SMA Negeri 3 Makassar. (3)To find out whether or not there is a significant correlation between students` achievement (high, medium and low) and their language learning strategies in learning English at SMAN 3 Makassar. This research was designed by using quantitative research. The researcher had collected the data through paper based questionnaire and documentation as the research instrument. These instruments were taken to find out the language learning strategies that the students used. The questionnaire which was consisted of 50 items. The sample consisted of 108 students of first grade of SMA Negeri 3 Makassar, in Academic Year 2015/2016. The research outcomes were: (1) high achievers used five categories of LLSs there are cognitive, memory, metacognitive, affective and compensation strategies, while medium and low achievers used all categories of LLSs there are cognitive, memory, metacognitive, affective, compensation and social strategies(2) There are no significant differences among high, medium and low achievers of English in using LLSs except in cognitive and social strategies. It proved by ANOVA test score which (0.159, 0.947, 0.068, 0.278> 0.05) and (0.047, 0.000 < 0.05) (3) There is no correlation between LLSs and English achievement except for social strategies. In social strategies show there is correlation between social strategies and English achievement. Key words: language learning strategies, high, medium and low achievers
