Abstract

Obstacles and difficulties in doing thesis are conditions that cannot be avoided by students. Optimism is needed in-order-to keep thinking positive even though students are in state of inhibition and experiencing difficulties. Best possible self is one of the simple interventions that can be used to increase optimism. This study aims to test the best possible self to increase optimism in UNM students who are working thesis. 16 participants were devided into two groups, namely experimental group (9 participants) and control group (7 participants). The experimental design used in this study was a pretest-posttest control group design. Data analysis technique used Mann Whitney test and Willcoxon test. The result of this study prove that the best possible self can increase the optimism of UNM students who are working their thesis (ρ=0,007 for the experimental group and ρ=0,307 for the control group). This research contributes to students and lecturers to be able to use the best possible self as an intervention to increase optimism. Keyword: Best Possible Self, Optimism, Students.
