*) Abstract: The study aims at (1) identifying the description of the implementation of scientific learning approach in IPS (Social Sciences) learning of Grade IV students at SDN Sudirman II Makassar (2) discovering the description of IPS cognitive ability of grade IV students at SDN Sudirman II Makassar, (3) examining the influence of the implementation of scientific learning approach on IPS cognitive ability of grade IV students at SDN Sudirman II Makassar. Grade IV was decided as the research subjects; then, they were grouped to the experiment group and control group. The decision concerning the subject was based on the list of results of teachers’ assessment recommendation of academic year 2015-2016 of the first semester. The type of study was the experiment research with true experiment design. The dependent variable of the study was cognitive ability and independent variable was the scientific approach. In order to discover the results of the study, the researcher employed instrument of learning outcome measurement in the form of multiple choices with 15 item questions. The learning result was analyzed using t-test formula through SPSS 20.0 for Windows program. Based on the result of descriptive analysis and hypothesis test, it is discovered that there is a difference of cognitive ability of experiment and the control grup significantly, proved by t-test results on cognitive ability that H0 is rejected because p = 0,000 < 0,05 = α. The mean of post-test score cognitive ability in experiment group is 75,53; whereas, the mean score of the control group is 62,22; thus, the experiment group is greater than the control group because the t-test had been conducted so the utilization of scientific approach gives positive influence on the improvement of critical thinking ability. Considering the importance of scientific approach, teachers should employ this approach as the alternative to practice cognitive ability of students and other abilities to improve learning outcomes. Besides, this learning model should be tested to other material. Key words: scientific approach, cognitive ability
