Abstract

The purpose of the study is to explore how higher education students develop their intercultural communicative competence (ICC) based on the lecturers’ perceptions during one academic semester. The researcher focused on the viewpoints on intercultural interaction experiences and competence as enacted by the lecturers in the area of the study. For this purpose, the study was conducted based on both quantitative and qualitative design. The 102 participants set are in English Language teaching department in a private higher education in Indonesia. The result of this study implies that the lecturers commonly promoted the aspects by comparing the target culture with the students’ own culture. Those teaching approaches are used to improve students’ linguistic knowledge and facilitate a better oral and written skill so the students can employ various strategies in the academic situation. It also reveals that the activities carried out contributed a lot to develop the students’ intercultural communicative competence.
