Abstract
This study aims to describe the application of message design principles in thematic book theme 3 for the fifth grade school using a qualitative approach and a type of content analytical research. The source of the data is the topic book Topic 3 for the 5th grade of elementary school, with a descriptively analyzed document study data collection, which is obtained from coding sheets and supported by the results of the respondents. The results obtained from the research that the fifth grade elementary school thematic book theme 3 applies message design principles including visual design, text design and screen/layout design. The application of visual design principles includes 1) line elements, 2) shape elements, 3) texture elements, 4) color elements, and 5) illustrations. Further, the application of text styling is 1) the use of clear titles with few words, 2) the use of boxes to emphasize the text, 3) the presentation of headings, 4) the presentation of questions, 5) the order, 6) the usage a list of sequences and 7) final presentation. Meanwhile, the screen design/layout implementation applies the following 1) visual elements, 2) text elements, and 3) invisible elements. However, the use of message design principles in the theme book contained elements of text design principles that were not applied, namely the presentation of a summary and structure of the text content. In addition, some elements need to be improved and considered in their application according to message design principles in order for the message to be delivered properly.
