Abstract

This studyanalyzes the patterns and impacst of migration on social and economic condition of the city of Makassar. Bandar Makassar is the capital of South Sulawesi located strategically and fuctions as the centre of communication between the west and east provinces as well as the north and southern Indonesia. The location serves as a powerfull pull factor to migrants. In 2000, the population was 1.1 million, and 38.2 percent were migrants. The figure incrreased in 2010 to 43.62 percent. Greatest figures originated from the town Bone, followed by Tana Toraja and Jeneponto. Migrant characteristics are varied, ranging from total, age, gender, marital status, education, employment etc. Migration is identified as the cause of high population density, pressures on the environment, increased in available manpower, education, job competion, crime rates and settlement congestion. Therefore the authority of the Makassar city ought to have policies, strategies and planning and implementation of laws in order to overcome the problems associated with migration.
