Abstract

Abstract: Exploitation of the Subaltern in Lan Fang’s Novel Japanese Flower Woman (A Gayatri Spivak Postcolonial Review). This study aims to reveal forms of exploitation and violence against subalterns in Lan Fang’s novel Japanese Flower Woman, seen from the postcolonial review of Gayatri Spivak. This research is qualitative descriptive. The data of this research are in the form of words, phrases, or sentences which indicate forms of exploitation and violence against subaltern characters in Lan Fang’s novel Japanese Flower Woman. The data source of this research is the novel Japanese Flower Woman, by Lan Fang, published by PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama, Jakarta in 2007 (second printing).The data in this study were analyzed using the Gayatri Spivak postcolonial theory. The data collection techniques used in this study were library techniques, listening, and taking notes. The data analysis technique in this study was carried out by flowing analysis consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the research are forms of exploitation of the subaltern during the colonial period, namely sexual and economic exploitation. As for the forms of violence experienced by subaltern characters in the novel, namely physical violence and psychological violence. Keywords: Exploitation, Subaltern, and Postcolonial.
