Abstract

ABSTRACT YULIANA A. Certified Teachers of English and Their Professional Competence at Vocational High Schools in Bone. (Supervised by Mansur Akil and Abdul Halim) This research aimed at giving description about the certified teachers of English and their professional competence which focused on some important points namely; mastering the subject taught; planning the lesson; selecting the material; using the instructional media; understanding the students and managing the classroom. The method employed in this research was descriptive evaluative method. Technique used in selecting the participants was purposive sampling technique. The participants of this research were three certified teachers of English. The instruments used in collecting the data were observation and interview. The data gained were analyzed qualitatively. The result of the research shows that the three certified teachers of English have different competence in term of professional competence. In terms of mastering the subject taught all the three teachers master the subject taught well. The terms of presenting the material systematically the only the teacher is capable in that term is teacher I. the next point is planning the lesson the three teachers have different consideration in planning the lesson. Teacher I considered the language procedure, media used and time allocation while teacher II noticed the facilities provided. Teacher III formulated the lesson plan based on the syllabus. In selecting material all three teachers considered the students’ ability. Teacher I has other consideration such us the students’ need and the students’ prior knowledge whereas teacher III needed to notice the basic and standard competence. Using instructional media in teaching was implemented by teacher I. He used a variety of instructional media Different from teacher II and III, the only media they used is handbook. In addition, some efforts done by the teachers in developing their professional competence are by joining training, seminar, workshop, self development by reading many books and learning from the internet while some factors supporting the certified teachers of English in implementing their professional competence. They are the internal and external factors. ABSTRAK YULIANA A. Guru Bahasa Inggris Tersertifikasi dan Kompetensi Profesionalnya di Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan di Bone. (dibimbing oleh Mansur Akil dan Abdul Halim) Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran mengenai guru bahasa inggris tersertifikasi dan kompetensi professionalnya yang berfokus pada beberapa poin penting yaitu, kemampuan menguasai mata pelajaran yang diajarkan, merencanakan pembelajaran, memilih materi yang tepat, menggunakan media pembelajaran, memahami siswa dan mengelola kelas. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif evaluatif. Tehnik sampling yang digunakan adalah Purposive Sampling Technique. Subjek penelitian dalam penelitian ini adalah tiga guru bahasa inggris tersertifikasi. Alat untuk mengumpulkan data yaitu wawancara dan observasi. Data yang diperolah dianalisis secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ketiga guru bahasa inggris tersertifikasi ini memiliki kompetensi professional yang berbeda. Dalam hal penguasaan materi, ketiganya menguasai materi yang diajarkan dengan baik. Poin berikutnya yaitu merencanakan pembelajaran. Ketiga guru ini memiliki pertimbangan yang berbeda dalam merencanakan pembelajaran. Guru I mempertimbangkan prosedur pengajaran, media yang digunakan dan alokasi waktu sementara guru II memperhatikan fasilitas yang tersedia. Guru III merencanakan pembelajaran berdasarkan silabus. Dalam memilih materi yang tepat ketiga guru mempertimbangkan kemampuan siswa. Selain itu guru I mempertimbangkan hal lain seperti kebutuhan siswa dan pengetahuan yang sudah dimiliki oleh siswa sementara guru III memperhatikan kompetensi dasar dan standar kompetensi. Penggunaan media dalam pengajaran di implementasikan oleh guru I. Dia menggunakan media pembelajaran yang bervariasi. Sangat berbeda dengan guru II and guru III, mereka hanya menggunakan buku pegangan sebagai media. Sebagai tambahan beberapa usaha yang dilakukan oleh guru dalam meningkatkan kompetensi professional mereka yaitu dengan mengikuti pelatihan, seminar, workshop serta dengan melakukan pengembangan diri dengan banyak membaca buku dan belajar melalui internet. Sementara ada beberapa faktor yang mendukung dan menghambat dalam mengimplementasikan kompetensi professional yaitu internal dan eksternal faktor.
