Abstract

ABSTRACT ASRIATI. A Study of Effective English Language Teachers at Senior High School Level in Makassar. (Supervised by Haryanto and Sukardi Weda). The effective English language teacher has different characteristics with those ordinary one. There should be investigation in order to know what is exactly specialty and specific characteristics that effective English language teachers have. Therefore this research aims to investigate the characteristics of effective English language teachers that they possess based on their competence in Makassar and the backgrounds of effective English language teachers that contribute to develop their abilities in teaching. This research applied a qualitative research method using case study approach. The findings of this research show the characteristics of effective English language teachers in Makassar are divided into several categories; professional competence, pedagogical competence, social competence, personal qualities, and intra and intercultural awareness. Effective English language teachers emphasized their characteristics mostly on professional and pedagogical competence while the students categorized their teachers based on their personal qualities. In terms of personal background, there are several characteristics that could be concluded, they were inspired by their teachers that make them interested in English and become English teachers, they have positive attitudes toward English since they were students, and the second and the third research subject come from teachers’ family while the first research subject does not come from teachers’ family, but they all admitted that their families have important roles to their career as teachers. ABSTRAK ASRIATI. Sebuah Studi Tentang Guru Bahasa Inggris yang Efektif pada Tingkat Sekolah Menengah Atas di Kota Makassar. (Dibimbing oleh Haryanto dan Sukardi Weda). Guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif memiliki karakteristik yang berbeda dengan guru yang biasa saja. Sebaiknya ada investigasi untuk mengetahui apa sebenarnya keunikan dan karakteristik khusus yang dimiliki oleh guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi karakteristik guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif yang mereka miliki berdasarkan kompetensinya di kota Makassar dan latar belakang dari guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif yang berkontribusi dalam peningkatan kemampuan mengajarnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif yang disebut penelitian studi kasus. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif di kota Makassar dibagi dalam beberapa kategori yakni, kompetensi profesional, kompetensi pedagogik, kompetensi sosial, kompetensi kepribadian, dan pemahaman intra dan interkultural. Guru-guru bahasa Inggris yang efektif menitik beratkan karakteristik mereka pada kompetensi profesional dan kompetensi pedagogik sementara para siswa mengategorikan guru bahasa Inggris mereka berdasarkan kompetensi kepribadiannya. Dalam hal latar belakang personal, ada beberapa karakteristik yang dimiliki oleh ketiga subyek pada penelitian ini, yaitu mereka terinspirasi oleh guru-guru mereka yang membuat mereka tertarik dengan bahasa Inggris dan menjadi guru, mereka memiliki sikap positif terhadap bahasa Inggris sejak berstatus sebagai siswa, serta subyek penelitian kedua dan ketiga berasal dari keluarga guru sementara subyek penelitian pertama tidak berasal dari keluarga guru, tetapi mereka semua mengakui bahwa keluarga mereka memiliki peranan yang penting terhadap karir mereka sebagai guru.
