Abstract

ABSTRACT Asriadi. 2019. Using the Environmental Based Learning in Teaching English Vocabulary at Makassar Islamic Secondary School. (Supervised by Kisman Salija and M. Asfah Rahman). The objectives of the research were (1) to know using the environmental based learning in teaching English increasing students’ English vocabulary achievement at Makassar Islamic secondary school and (2) to know the students’ interests to the environmental based learning in teaching English vocabulary at Makassar Islamic secondary school. The researcher applied quasi-experimental design. There were two classes namely control and experimental group. The Population of this research was students at the first grade students of MTsN 1 Makassar in academic year 2018/2019 which consisted of 440 students. The sampling technique in this research was cluster sampling. The researcher chose sample by selecting the sample and took two classes from first grade at MTsN 1 Makassar. The classes consisted of 40 students. So, the total samples of this research were 80 students.. The research data were collected using test, questionnaire and analyzed by means descriptive statistic through SPSS version 22 for windows program. The result of this research showed that (1) Using the environmental based learning in teaching English enhancing English vocabulary students’ achievement at Makassar Islamic secondary school. The result was based on pretest of control and experimental groups, the researcher found that the p-Value (probability value) is higher than α (0.05) and the degree of freedom 39. The t-test value of experimental and control group in pretest was not significant. Meanwhile, the p-Value of posttest from both groups was lower than α (0.02 < 0.05) and the degree of freedom was 39. The t-test value of both groups in posttest was significantly different. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted and, of course, the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It showed that the use of method significantly enrich English students’ achievement in the experimental group. (2) The students’ interests to the environmental based learning in teaching English enhancing English vocabulary at Makassar Islamic secondary school.
