Abstract

ABSTRACT The study aims at examining the types of mistakes done by students in solving social Arithmetic Verbal problems. The study was conducted in grade VII at SMP Persada Makassar which consisted of 20 students. Data of students’ mistakes were obtained from the result of the written tes. The students’ mistakes were identified into the type and the position of the mistakes. Four students were chosen as the respondents to be interviewed. The students’ employed descriptive qualitative research. The data collecting method employed observation, test and interview. The research instruments were in forms of written test sheet and interview guidance sheet. Data were analyzed by conducting data, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study reveal that the types of mistakes done by the students are as follows: (a) conceptual mistake which consists of 1) incorrect writing known in question, 2) inccorect writing asked in question, 3) misinterpreting the final answer from the question; (b) fact mistake which consists of 1) incomprehensible of symbol, terminology from the question; (c) mistake on operation which consists of 1) mistakes in using addition, subcration, multiplication, and devision operations; (d) principle mistake which consists of 1) mistake in using formula, nature, proposition, in solving the question. Based on the results of interview, the causing factors of mistakes done by the students are as follows: (a) students were less understood about the content of the question related to operating cost and less understood about the discount as well as the tax, (b) students were used to use multiplication operation then reduction operation, (c) studebts did not know and forget the formula, (d) students were in a rush to answer the question, (e) students did not know wich should be done first, (f) students were not careful and did not focus in reading and answering the question, (g) students were not careful in counting, and (h) students did not make rechecking the answer and in a rush to finish quickly.
