Abstract

ABSTRACT Siti Muthmainnah Massi.2019. Teacher’s beliefs and practice on the use of visual materials in teaching English vocabulary to the deaf students at SLB YPAC Makassar. A Thesis. English Education Department, Graduate Program Universitas Negeri Makassar. (Supervised by Kisman Salija and Maemuna Muhayyang.) The research was aimed to identify the beliefs of English teacher hold about the teaching of vocabulary with visual materials in transmission and nurturing perspectives and to discover the teaching English vocabulary with visual materials carried out by English teacher in terms of the appropriate visual materials for teaching English vocabulary and the difficulties that the teacher faces in teaching English vocabulary to the deaf students at SLB YPAC Makassar. The subject of this research was a teacher of deaf students. This study used a qualitative research design in collecting the data. The researcher observed the classroom and conducted an interview by using an audio recording. The data collection was conducted from April 23rd to May 31st,2019. Based on the findings, the teacher believes that visual materials help her to make deaf students easier understand English vocabulary in order to achieve two perspectives the teacher holds namely transmission and nurturing perspective. The findings confirm that transmission perspective showed well-preparation in every meeting with the objectives simple and clear, the main objective to master the content was achieved. In a nurturing perspective, the teacher supported the deaf students and facilitated the teaching and learning process with visual materials in order to motivate them. At the same time, the deaf students also motivated the efforts of their friends to learn. While the achievement of deaf students in this research was not really high. The achievement here was about how the deaf students with their limited ability can improve their self-confidence also gave an effort to their selves to learning English vocabulary.The finding also confirms that the teacher carried out the teaching process in three phases: opening, while teaching, and closing with LCD Projector as the appropriate visual material and the difficulty to describe vocabulary in sign language. The result of the research was expected to give a positive contribution todeaf students in the education field. The findings of the research provided useful information to educators as well as the government that Indonesia needs English teachers for deaf students.
