Abstract

ABSTRACT This study descriptive research with qualitative approach. The study aims at examining the literacy ability in solving Mathematics problems. The Mathematics literacy ability consists of 3 stages, namely formulating the situasion mathematically, applyng the concept, and interpreting the Mathematics result. The research subjects were grade IX students with 50 student. The researcher gave Mathematics literacy test then chosen 6 subjects based on the ability level in PISA. Data were collected by employing instruments of Mathematics literacy test and interview test. Data validity was tested by employing through triangulation of methods. Based of the result of the test after conducting Mathematics literacy test and interview, the researcher obtained the conclusion that in level I there 1 subject (AF) that could solve literacy question number 1 by using Mathematics literacy process by formulating the situation mathematically, applying the concept, and interpreting the Mathematics result. In the II, there are 2 subjects (AA and AR) that could solve literacy question number 1 and 2 by using Mathematics literacy proces but AA subject could not interpret literacy question number 2; whereas, AR subject could interpret literacy question number 1 and 2. Then, the two subjects (AA and AR) could not solve literacy question number 3 and 4. In level III, there are 2 subjects (RE and AE) that could solve literacy question number 1, 2, and 3 by using Mathematics literacy process but RE subject could interpret Mathematics result in literacy question number 1, 2, and 3; whereas, literacy question number 4 could not be solved. Then AE subject could not interpret mathematics reuslt in literacy question number 2 and 3; whereas, literacy question number 4 could not be solved. In level IV there is 1 subject (RY) that could solved literacy question number 1, 2, 3 and 4 by using Mathematics literacy process. Keywords: Mathematics Literacy Ability, Mathematics Problem Solving, Mathematics Ability Level in PISA
