Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim to study mathematics in school is to rely on reasoning structure and shaping students’ attitudes and to emphasize on skills in applying mathematics. Therefore, students are requered to solve various types of mathematical problems. In order to achieve learning objectives, teacher need information on the way students think. In addition, the cognitive style of students is also one of the aspects thet need to be considered in learning, especially at the stage of solving non-routine problems. The intended cognitive style is impulsive and reflective cognitive style. The purpose of this study is to obtain a description of the results of analysis of students’ thinking processes in solving non-routine problems in terms of tempo conceptual cognitive style (impulsive cognitive style and reflective style) of students in class XI MA Faqihul Ilmi Makassar. This students is qualitative research. The research subjects were four students in class XI MA Faqihul Ilmi Makassar. The research subjects were chosen by employing MFFT instrument. Similar initial ability (high category), gender, and communication ability were also included as considerations in choosing the subjects. Them, the researcher gave mathematics problem solving test on arithmetic material, and interview to the subjects. Data validity was conducted through time triangulation. The results of the study are as follows: the reflective subjects achieved each step of thinking process. The reflective subject always showed slow thinking attitude in answering questions from the researcher so they tended to need long time; however, the answers given were based on in-depth imformation process. As a result, each of the proven steps was conducted based on wellthought consideration; thus, the subjects could realize the mistakes encountered. The impulsive subjects were also achieved each step of thinking process; however, they always showed fast thinking attitute when answering the questions from the researcher so they only needed short time; thus, the anwers gived were based on less in-depth information process. As a result, the subjects could not realize the mistakes they encountered. Keywords: thinking process, tempo conceptual cognitive style, arithmetic.
