Abstract

The Effect of Mind Mapping Strategy at The Second Year Students of SMP Islam Terpadu Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar Andi Effy Selvinia Salassa Arifuddin Hamra Murni Mahmud State University of Makassar, Indonesia Email: andieffyselvinia_salassa@yahoo.co.id Abstract The objective of this study was to find out whether or not the effect of the use of Mind Mapping Strategy in improving the reading comprehension of the second year students at SMP Islam Terpadu Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar and to find out whether or not the second year students at SMP Islam Terpadu Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar are interested in studying reading comprehension through Mind Mapping Strategy. The method was quasi-experimental design. The instruments were test, questionnaire and interview. There were 52 students as the sample, 27 students of experimental group and 25 students of control group. The data were analyzed through descriptive and inferential statistics through SPSS 17 program. The result of the study showed that Mind Mapping Strategy significantly improved students’ reading comprehension. It was proved by t-test value of mind mapping strategy 0.00, and it indicated lower than the t-table (alpha) in the significant level 0.05 (0.00<0.05). The mean score of students’ posttest in experiment group was 68.38 and control group was 56.25. In the significant difference in the effect of mind mapping strategy and non mind mapping strategy, this study showed that there was significant difference in the effect of mind mapping strategy and non mind mapping strategy. It was proved by the t-test value for equality of mean of strategy 0.04, and it indicated lower than the t-table (alpha) in the significant level 0.05 (0.04<0.05). It means that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted. The students’ interest was categorized in high category for experimental group. It was proved by the mean score of interest 74.78. Finally, this study stated that mind mapping strategy contributed to the improvement of reading comprehension and could improve the interest in reading of the second year students of SMP Islam Terpadu Wahdah Islamiyah, 2012/2013 academic year.
