Abstract

USING ENGLISH SONGS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ WRITING SKILL Firda Ruslianty Rusman1), Arifuddin Hamra2) 1)Program Pascasarjana Universitas Negeri Makassar, Makassar 90222 Hp : 085242462325, Email : firdaruslianty@yahoo.com 2)Dosen Pascasarjana Universitas Negeri Makassar, Makassar Email : arifhamra@yahoo.com ABSTRACT This research aimed at examining whether or not the use of English Songs improves the writing skill of the first year students of SMA Negeri 1 Kalmas Pangkep. This research employed quasi-experimental method which assigned two groups namely experimental group and control group. Each group consisted of 30 students, so the total sampling was 60 students. The sampling technique used in the research was cluster random sampling.The result of the data analysis showed that the mean score of posttest of the experimental group was 6.03 which was higher than control group was 5.27 (6.03>5.27). however, there was no significant difference, proved by the Probability Value (P-Value) of t-test which showed that P-value was equal to level of significant (0.05=0.05). The result indicated that the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was rejected. Based on the result, it can be said that there was no differentiation between the use of English songs and other media, in this case narrative text. The conclusion of the study was the use of English Songs did not significantly improve the students' writing skill of the first year student of SMA Negeri 1 Kalmas Pangkep. The weaknesses of the research based on the result were: less intensive communication between students and researcher due to the limited time; more information contained within the narrative text so students get a more accurate explanation of the text; whereas, the information given in the lyrics of the songs were not too apparent and often used poetic language. Keywords: English Songs, Students’ writing Skill ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah penggunaan Lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa tahun pertama (Kelas X) SMA Negeri 1 Kalmas Pangkep. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuasi-eksperimental yang meliputi dua grup yakni grup eksperimen dan grup kontrol. Masing-masing grup terdiri dari 30 siswa, maka total sampel berjumlah 60 siswa. Teknik penentuan sampel yang digunakan dalan penelitian ini adalah sampel acak kelompok. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata tes akhir dari grup eksperimen adalah 6.03 yang mana berarti lebih tinggi dari grup kontrol yakni 5.27 (6.03>5.27). Akan tetapi, perbedaannya tidak signifikan, hal ini terbukti dari nilai uji kemungkinan Probability Value (P-Value) dimana hasil uji T menunjukkan bahwa P-value sama dengan level signifikan (0.05=0.05). Hasil tersebut menunjukkan bahwa Hipothesis Null (H0) diterima dan Hipotesis Alternatif (H1) ditolak. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat dikatakan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan antara penggunaan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris dengan media lainnya, dalam hal ini teks naratif. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan lagu-lagu bahasa Inggris tidak meningkatkan keterampilan menulis siswa Kelas X SMA Negeri 1 Kalmas Pangkep. Kelemahan dari penelitian ini berdasarkan hasil penelitian adalah: kurang intensifnya komunikasi antara siswa dan peneliti karena keterbatasan waktu; pada teks naratif terdapat informasi yang lebih banyak sehingga siswa memperoleh penjelasan yang lebih akurat; sedangkan informasi yang terdapat pada lirik lagu tidak terlalu jelas terpapar dan seringkali menggunakan bahasa puitis.
