Abstract

ABSTRACT MUHAMMAD NAWFAL S RIFAI. Interlanguage Pragmatics: Patterning Pragmatic and Grammatical Awareness of the K11 Students of SMA Katolik Rajawali and SMA Negeri 4 Makassar. (Supervised by Promoter Muh Asfah Rahman and Co-promoter Syarifuddin Dollah) The research aimed at (i) describing what L1 pragmatic carry-over that had positive and negative transfer occurring at the levels of sociopragmatic and pragmalinguistic knowledge; and (ii) determining what type of awareness that made difference for the students in both school in their production of request, refusal, and apology speech acts. This research applied qualitative method in the form of observation. For the purpose of patterning which type of awareness the learners would finally be disposed to, sixteen K11 students were involved actively in the observation; they were 6 students of SMAN 4 Makassar, and 10 K11 students of SMA Katolik Rajawali Makassar. The findings indicated that, in terms of degree severity (i) learners were relatively more inclined to grammar awareness than to pragmatic awareness; this was reflected in the mean scores gained of each items of scenarios across learners; (ii) however, on the contrary, learner’s understanding of what is appropriate according to language’s rules of use is very much less than that of rules of form, particularly for the K11 students of SMAN 4 Makassar whose gained mean score is half less than the K11 students of SMA Katolik Rajawali Makassar. Therefore, it was concluded that on average learners’ awareness of pragmatic was somewhat digressing to less degree of severity. This trend was also corroborated by the fact of learners’ written and oral responses to discourse completion tasks: (i) learners’ written responses tended to be to some extents lengthier than oral responses; (ii) in both forms of responses, learners frequently were found to have used more than one speech strategy realizations as mitigating device of face-loss effects, such as the mixing of direct and indirect strategies; and (iii) there was a dependency of modifiers to extend either intention or meaning of communicative acts or amplifier toward politeness effects of speech act behaviors, causing not much relying on the propositional content of the speech acts rendered . Thus, it is obvious that (i) pragmatic effects of L1 transfer are evident at the level of the speech acts realization under scrutiny; and (ii) learners have not received sufficient pragmatic input in the context of classroom being attended so far. ABSTRAK MUHAMMAD NAWFAL S RIFAI. Pragmatik Pemerolehan Pembelajaran Bahasa: Kesadaran Grammatika dan Pragmatik Siswa Kelas XI SMA Katolik Rajawali dan SMA Negeri 4 Makassar. (Dibimbing oleh Promotor Muh Asfah Rahman dan Kopromotor Syarifuddin Dollah) Penelitian ini bertujuan: (i) menggambarkan pengaruh timbal balik pengetahuan sosiopragmatik dan pragmalinguistik bahasa ibu siswa terhadap tindak tutur yang dilakukan dengan bahasa Inggris yang dipelajari; dan (ii) menentukan arah pemahaman yang dicapai oleh dua kelompok siswa yang menyebabkan mereka berbeda di dalam tindak tutur request, refusal, dan apology. Metode kualitatif dalam bentuk observasi digunakan untuk pengukuran; dan 16 siswa terlibat secara aktif di dalam penelitian ini: 6 siswa dari SMA Negeri 4, dan 10 siswa dari SMA Katolik Rajawali Makassar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ternyata, (i) siswa lebih condong kepada tingkat kesadaran grammatika dari pada pragmatik; ini tercermin oleh tingginya mean skor grammatika dari setiap skenario yang diberikan; (ii) meskipun demikian, ini tidak diikuti oleh tingkat pemahaman pragmatik siswa yang sepadan; khususnya untuk siswa kelas XI SMA Negeri 4 Makassar yang mendapatkan mean pragmatik skor lebih rendah separuh dari pada yang didapatkan oleh sebaya mereka siswa kelas XI SMA Katolik Rajawali Makassar. Dengan demikian disimpulkan bahwa apabila pemerolehan skor pragmatik tersebut digabung kesadaran siswa akan pragmatik secara rata-rata menurun dibandingkan dengan kesadaran gramatika. Hasil ini juga dikuatkan oleh respon tertulis dan lisan siswa terhadap discourse completion tasks: (i) respon tertulis lebih panjang daripada respon lisan; (ii) di kedua tipe respon tersebut, siswa menggunakan lebih dari satu strategi tindak tutur seperti strategi campuran antara strategi tindak tutur langsung maupun tidak langsung; dan (iii) ada ketergantungan terhadap penggunaan unsur pelengkap kalimat atau modifier untuk menyampaikan pesan ataupun maksud dari tindak tutur yang dilakukan. Juga menjadi jelas bahwa: (i) adanya pengaruh timbal balik pragmatik bahasa ibu di dalam pola tindak tutur yang diteliti; dan (ii) siswa tidak cukup menerima pragmatik input di dalam konteks pembelajaran yang diikuti.
