Haryanto State University of Makassar ABSTRACT The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the extent to which TBLT is able to improve the students’ writing ability and (2) to find out whether or not the students are interested in studying writing by using TBLT. The design of this study was quasi experimental. The population of this research was the tenth year students of SMK Negeri 2 Makassar academic year 2013/2014. This research used cluster random sampling. The sample of this research consisted of 72 students from two groups. Each group consisted of 36 students. The data were collected through pretest and posttest and analyzed by using SPSS 17. The mean score of posttest of experimental group was higher than the mean score of control group 84.02 > 55.22. Based on t-test value, H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. It can be proved by the probability value of the students’ posttest of experimental and control group was lower than α (0.00 < 0.05). Based on the result of questionnaires, the mean score was 81.83 which was categorized as high interest. It can be concluded that the use of TBLT is strongly effective in improving the students’ writing ability and the students are interested in studying writing through the implementation of TBLT.
