Abstract

Abstract. Phonology is a branch of linguistics that examines the sounds of language according to its function. Phonology determines the sounds of language produced by a speech or human speech, whether a word is meaningful or not. The purpose of the research is to describe the phonology system of Tae’ language as qualitatively using the field data. The primary data is utterances in Tae’ language, namely words, phrases, and sentences that are divided into 200 basic vocabularies and 200 cultural vocabularies. The source of data is gained from Tae’ speakers that use an interview, noting, and recording technique. The result shows that phonology system in Tae’ language is formed based on the minimal pair of vowel phonemes and consonant phonemes. The vowel phonemes in Tae ' language are / a /, / u /, / e /, / o /, / i /. While, the consonant phonemes in Tae’ language are / p /, / b /, / m /, / t / , / d /, / n /, / s /, / l /, / r /, / y /, / c /, / j /, and / w /. The realization or distribution of those phonemes is in different positions. The position of the vowel phoneme occupies at the initial, middle, and end of the word. Some even occupy the position at the initial and end of the word. While, the position of the consonant phonemes occupies the initial and middle position only and never occupies at the final position of the word, thus, Tae' language is categorized as vocalist language.
