Abstract

ABSTRACT MAF’ULAH. 2015. The Effective Teacher’s Strategies in Teaching English at SMP AL-Azhar Palu. (Supervised by Haryanto and Sukardi Weda) This research aims at investigating the characteristics of an effective teacher based on the students’ perception. The characteristics of an effective teacher based on competences that possessed by the teacher, the strategies used by the effective teacher and the strategies used by the effective teacher based on the students’ perception. This research applied descriptive method by using questionnaire, interview and classroom observation as instruments in data collection. This research took a location in SMP Al-Azhar Palu. The subject of the research is an English teacher of SMP Al-Azhar Palu and 20 students in the second year of SMP Al-Azhar Palu who were chosen by applying purposive sampling. The result of this research revealed that 1)the characteristics of an effective teacher based on students’ perception showed that from categories of competences, pedagogical and personal competence that relates to the teachers’ personality as the most important for the students. Students also perceived that being discipline, beingfair, having sense of humor, being creative and being friendly are characteristics that should be possessed by the teacher, 2) based on competences possessed by the teacher revealed that pedagogical competences dealt with teacher preparation before teaching, teacher qualities in teaching, classroom management, and the use of media in teaching. Based on teacher’s personal competence that he accommodated the students with positive attitude by showing responsibility by obeying the rule, being punctual, teaching well, managing and behaving positively to the students. Social competence is building a good relation with the students. And the professional competence that dealt with teacher development. The effective teacher should also have knowledge psychological aspect of the students, 3)the effective teacher of SMP Al-AzharPalu applied various teaching techniques and strategies in the classroom. The strategies applied such as discussion, direct instruction, games, and also giving encouragement and reinforcement, and 4)teaching strategies applied by the teacher based on students’ perception is in line with the data gathered by the researcher from classroom observations that the teacher applied various strategies such as games, discussion, using audio visual and role playing.
