Abstract

ABSTRACT Ammang Latifa. 2015. Developing A Practical Rating Rubric of Speaking Performance for University Students of English (Promoted by M. Asfah Rahman, Arifuddin Hamra and Baso Jabu) This study focused on developing a rating rubric of speaking performance in the classroom setting. As Preview, there are two general typical rating rubrics of speaking that are used to assess the students’ oral production. These typical rubrics are holistic and analytic. The holistic rubric is used to score the speaker’s production in an overall process without judging all components separately. Another one is analytic rubric. It requires the rater to score the resulting test by considering the components of communicative competence separately (Moskal, 2000 & Nitko, 2001). This research developed a new design of rubric of speaking test and investigated the lecturers’ performances to use the rating of speaking performance by using Practical Rating Rubric of Speaking Performance (P2RSP). In developing the rubric, the researcher applied the approach of Research and Development (R&D). This approach was implemented in ten steps namely, identified problem, need analysis, design, develop, validation, field test in small scale, revision, field test in large scale, revision, implementation. The raters were English speaking lecturers at number higher education institution in Parepare, namely, Universitas Muhammadiyah Parepare and STAIN Parepare. This study chosed the samples purposively, and there were two typical steps of collecting data, the first step was trying out of the product, and the second step was a distribution of questionnaires. The data were analyzed in the form of frequencies and percentages and described descriptive quantitatively and qualitatively. There are four results of this research. The first result; The model design of P2RSP rubric is a simple analytical rubric. It contained some components, namely the rating criteria of communicative competence, the band score and the descriptors of the scales. The rating criterion of communicative competences refers to grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, discourse, strategic competence. Another component is the band score. It consists of five scales namely, scale 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. The last components of the new rubric are descriptors of scales. 2) The second result; the use of P2RSP rubric was comprehended very well by the raters in the typical test of pair conversation and interview. The operation of P2RSP rubric did not properly work toward the presentation, debate, and discussion activity. 3) The third result; the raters’ responses were motivated in general toward the use of P2RSP rubric. In other word, the raters automatically encourage their self to perform the test of speaking that is more practically and frequently. 4) The fourth result; the rater’s perception was commonly in a very good perception of the organization, performance, practicality, and quality. Key words: Practical Rubric of Speaking performance
