Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a pre-experimental study which aims that at examining the effectiveness of problem-based learning with probing prompting methods in mathematics learning. The subjects of this research were grade VII students at SMPN 1 Mattirosompe in first semester of academic year of 2018/2019 which consisted of 7 classes, namely VII.1, VII.2, VII.3 VII.4 VII.5, VII.6, and VII.7. The experiment unit of the study was class VII.1 with 30 students obtained by using cluster random sampling technique. Data were obtained by using instruments in form of learning tests given to students at the end of the lesson in two forms of tests, namely essay and multiple-choice, activity observation sheet to observe students’ activities during the learning process, students’ response questionnaire to discover students’ response on problem-based learning with probing prompting methods, and observation sheet of learning implementation to discover the problem-based learning implementation using pobing prompting methods. Student learning outcomes were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The results of the descriptive analysis showed that 30 students in the experimental unit obtained the highest scoe of 96,7 for essays and 95 for multiple choice while the lowest scoe was 63,3 for essays and 65 for multiple choice foms. The average score of students was 78,89 for essays and 82,16 for multiple choice with the same standard deviation of 7,73; whereas, inferential analysis showed that sig >α, so the learning outcomes was above the KKM, completed classically, and the improvement of learning outcomes was in moderate category. The result of the analysis for student activities showed that from 30 students in the experimental unit, the percentage of active students indicators was 82% and 81% gave positive response on based on problem based learning with probing prompting methods in Mathematics learning, and this learning was conducted with 97% obtained from learning implementation observation sheet filled by the observers. Based on this analysis, it can be concluced that problembased learning with probing prompting method in Mathematics learning applied to grade VII students at SMPN 1 Mattirosompe is effective.
