Abstract

This research is mixed-methode from qualitative and quantitative which aims to explore mathematics representation of students in solving equation and inequality of absolute values of one variable mathematics problem based on the level of metacognitive awareness and comparison between high metacognitive subject (HM) and low metacognitive subject (LM). Instrument of the study is the researcher herself as the main instrument guide by using questinnaire of metacognitive awareness, diagnostic tests, and guided interview which are valid and reliable. Data collection is done by giving MAI questionnaires, the implementation of diagnostic tests and semi structured an open interview. The subjects were students og grades X-MIPA 1 consisted of four people (2 subjects with high metacognitive awareness and 2 subjects with low metacognitive). The research process follows the steps of: (a) the field orientation, the instrument support (MAI questionnaire, diagnostics tests and interview guides) are valid and reliable, (b) sample selection by cluster random sampling , (c) carry out research, filling out te metacognitive questionnaire and performing diagnostic test, (d) analysis of metacognitive data and mathematical representation, (e) selection of the main subject with a purposive samplingtechnique, (f) interview, (g) discuss the result of the analysis, (h) the analysis of the others finding, (i) draw conclusions from the results of the study. The result so that: (1) high metacognitive awareness subject (HM) on solving equation and inequality of absolute values of one variable problem always presented visual representation, the mathematics expressions, and verbal representation; whereas (2) low metacognitive awareness subject (LM) in solving equation and inequality of absolute values of one variable problem did not present a visual representation, the mathematics expression, verbal representation collaboratively on each problem, which solved based on the steps referred to Polya: (1) understanding the problem, (2) completion of the plan, (3) conduct the solution plan, (4) re-examine the answer. Based on the result, the problem solving can be used as a reference in developing mathematic learning models to improve mathematics representation ability of students based on the level of metacognitive awareness and can be used as a basis for further research that both as verification and modification.
