Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out (1) the cognitive readiness of the students of English Education Study Program in Parepare, and (2) the most dominant impacting factor of their cognitive readiness in learning English. This research employed a descriptive research design with mix method research; quantitative and qualitative method. The population of this research was the students of English Education Study Program at Faculty of Languages and Literature, State University of Makassar in academic year 2018/2019. This research used census sampling technique taking 18 students from English Education Study Program. The quantitative data were analyzed descriptively and inferential statisticly through SPSS version 22.0 for windows program and the data were analyzed by Miles’ and Huberman’s framework by editing, segmenting, summarizing, coding and memoing to develop the understanding and interpreting of the data. The results of this research revealed that (1) the interval mean score of ready category was about 75 to 88% covering five elements of cognitive readiness namely knowledge (83.78%), skills (74.67%), ability (84.67%), internal motivation (82.44%), and personal disposition (81.78%) by engaging their learning preference and eagerness. (2) The ability element included as the most dominant cognitive readiness that was chosen by 8 students (44.44 %) in the class. It takes into account that (1) the students of English Education Study Program Faculty of Language and Literature in Parepare State University of Makassar were cognitively ready to learn English, and (2) the most dominant impacting element of the students’ cognitive readiness in learning English was ability.
