Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to find out how the description and comparison of the difficulties of students of SMPN 1 Bontomatene in each steps of solving mathematical literacy problems related to space and shape on students who have spatial ability types of spatial relations, spatial orientation and spatial visualization. This type of research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. Stages of problem solving are referred to in this research are: (1) Understanding the problem; (2) Devising a plan; (3) Carrying out the plan; and (4) Looking back. This study used 3 types of instruments, namely: (1) Spatial ability test to classify students based on the type of students' spatial ability; (2) Math literacy problem solving test to analyze the difficulties students experience in each problem-solving step; and (3) Interview guidelines are used to delve deeper into the difficulties students experience. Based on the results of data analysis obtained: (1) In understanding the problem, students with spatial orientation type difficulties in understanding objects that experience changes in the position of objects experiencing rotation and difficulty in estimating the distance between two objects. Whereas students of spatial visualization type have difficulty in understanding the problem of connecting two separate objects into a single unit; (2) In devising a plan, students with spatial orientation type difficulties in determining concepts that can be used in problem solving planning conducted, while students with spatial ability types of spatial relations and spatial visualization have no difficulty in planning problem solving; (3) In the implementation of problem solving, both students with spatial ability types of spatial relations, spatial orientation and spatial visualization have difficulties in calculation algorithms and (4) In looking back steps, both students who have the type of spatial relations, spatial orientation and spatial visualization believes that the problem solving is correct so there is no need to looking back the problem solving. Keywords: student difficulties, problem solving, mathematical literacy, spatial ability
